Dental Crown Austin Westlake

Dental Crowns

Are your teeth filled with fillings from years of dental work? The health of your body depends on the state of your teeth, and teeth that are susceptible to decay can lead to problems elsewhere in your body. If you want your healthiest smile, you might be a candidate for dental crowns.

What Is a Dental Crown?

Dental crowns are small, tooth-shaped caps that go directly on top of an existing tooth. They can be used to restore its shape, protect it from further decay, and make chewing easier for you. Once cemented into place, a dentist can only remove crowns, and you will not see any part of the pre-existing tooth except at the gum line.  Many materials can be used for dental crowns, including porcelain, precious metals like silver or gold, stainless steel and more.

Our team at Austin Dental Care takes pride in crafting natural-looking crowns that are so subtle only you will know they are there.

Are You a Candidate for a Dental Crown?

Dental crowns are more than just a cosmetic fix- they are a way to improve the durability and functionality of your teeth. Too many fillings in any tooth will weaken it to the point that it might fall out or break, but covering it with a crown will work to protect its root structure and ensure it stays in your mouth longer than it otherwise would.

If one of the following tooth problems is something you have experienced, you might be a candidate for a dental crown.

  • Weak, broken, or cracked tooth (likely from previous decay)
  • Worn down tooth from chewing or night grinding
  • Tooth with a large filling that needs more support
  • Discoloration on the tooth

Children can sometimes benefit from dental crowns to protect any baby teeth too delicate for a filling before their adult teeth come in.

What Types of Crowns Are Available?

We offer many kinds of crowns at Austin Dental Care in Westlake, including the following.

  • Stainless Steel: Usually used as a temporary measure, stainless steels crowns often come pre-made and can help protect your teeth while a more permanent tooth is in production. This is the material that’s generally used for children’s crowns.
  • Precious Metals: Often dental crowns are made from a mix of gold or silver and a metal alloy like cobalt or nickel. While these crowns tend to be the most durable, the metal color is a drawback for using them for front teeth. For this reason, metal crowns are typically used for back molars instead.
  • Porcelain: Thanks to its durability and color matching, porcelain dental crowns are the most popular, especially in prominent parts of your mouth. However, porcelain can chip over time, meaning that they might need to be replaced over the years.

What Is Involved with Getting a Crown?

  1. When you come into Austin Dental Care for a crown, we will first take several X-rays of your mouth to check the health of the roots of the tooth in question and the surrounding teeth. Too much damage might mean that a root canal is needed before the tooth is a candidate for a crown.
  2. Once the X-rays are checked over, our dental team will anesthetize your tooth and shape it to make room for the crown to fit on top. In the case of a broken tooth, the material might be added instead to “build up” the tooth’s surface.
  3. Next, your dentist will take an impression of the tooth, either with putty or a digital scanner to ensure that the replacement is a perfect fit for the crown. Developing the crown may take several weeks, so you will get a temporary acrylic crown to wear in the meantime.
  4. When your crown is developed, our dental team will remove the temporary crown and fit you for the permanent one. Once everything is shown to fit well, your new crown is cemented in place. So long as you treat your new crown gently and take proper care of it, it should last for decades.

What Our Patients Say

Dr. Wainwright is a very talented dentist with a great staff! The practice is very accommodating and helpful. Dr. Wainwright works with the patient's needs and wants. The first question that they ask is ... What do you want us to do for you? What is your goal concerning your smile and teeth? I love this group of professionals.

I met Dr. Wainwright in 2002 when I had to do major dental work and was extremely afraid of dentists from previous experiences.  Everyone at Dr. Wainwright's office was so kind and welcoming from the beginning. He offers sedation dentistry which is what brought me in.  He was able to undo and repair years worth of work in a few sessions with sedation dentistry.  The best part is you come to without the knowledge of all the procedure you just went through.Because of my great experience with him so long ago, I've maintained regular maintenance and have Kristi, my personal hygienist, to thank for that.  She is the best and I always enjoy my cleaning with her.  I've had a few normal issues throughout the years since my major dental work and they were always detected so early and taken care of so fast that they never became an issue.I'm so glad I came across Dr. Wainwright so long ago.  I love to tell people how much I love my dentist and see their unbelieving faces...but I do!  The whole team is amazing.

Dr. Wainwright and his staff are wonderful, caring, happy people! Over the past 2 years, I’ve had a few procedures done and have been comfortable and happy every time. Dr. Wainwright has had to replace faulty work done by my previous dentist, making me wish I found Austin Dental Care so much sooner! I love the laid-back, friendly staff who always take the time to make sure the patient is comfortable and at ease. Couldn’t recommend this office more highly.

From the ladies at reception to the ladies in the back helping and up to Dr. Wainwright, this is a top-notch operation and I am blessed to have found them!

Dr. Wainwright's office is immaculate and very warm and inviting. His staff was also cheerful, friendly and helpful. He spent a lot of time explaining his approach to treatment and dental care to my son (and to me as well). He asked my son if he had any questions about our treatment plan and talked to him in a kind and direct manner. Dr. Wainwright is also very knowledgeable re: advancements in dental care procedures and techniques which is helpful as it gives my son (and our family) various treatment options. His staff was informative and clear about fees associated w/ treatment and let us know up front how much our treatment would cost. My kids were surprised with a little treat on the way out of the office which they LOVED.

She is consistently methodical in her cleaning process. Her personality is gentle and compassionate. Her experiential knowledge of her craft, and concern for the well-being of my dental health is always on display.
